About the murals

The City of Murals

In 1985, Grupo Arte Ahora was formed thanks to the initiative of Dr. Roberto Villalba, who on his return from Mexico proposed to plastic artists Luis Llarens, Juan Carlos Soto and architect Ernesto Alfano the idea of translating art through murals. This group and José Kura, dreamed of socializing art and rescue through his work certain characters of the history of Corrientes.

In 1989 the artists, Soto, Llarens and Kura travel to Misiones to exhibit some works, there they met an Israeli plastic artist, Leon Kotler, who taught them an ancient technique called sgraffito.

On the return of this trip, the City of the Murals Currents Project was drawn up and presented to the Deliberative Council, once approved; the construction of the Great Mural located on the wall of the Plazoleta Italia is carried out.

In 1991, the Multidisciplinary Group of the Guaranitic Region: Arte Ahora was created with plastic artists, poets, musicians and writers. So the Corrientes capital was named Corrientes, City of the Murals.

The technique of sgraffito: The sgraffito mural, the most used in Corrientes, is a technique where colors are applied on different layers of cement, removing the excess material according to the desired sketch and the colors that are discovered in successive layers.

The sandstone material that is used on the surface of the preparation is from the region due to its impermeability and durability over time. The sand is blond, sweet and with temperature, conditioned by the climatic conditions of the area.

Murals play a communicative role related to visual language and represent a great social value as a significant component of Cultural Heritage.
